Product Description
XHGG502A Cable Fault Pre-locator | Cable Fault Locator

XHGG502A is a portable cable fault pre-locator (cable fault tester) for measuring and analyzing the condition and fault distance of power cables. Using an industrial-grade 10.1 inch touchscreen all-in-one computer, it combines signal filtering, acquisition, data processing and graphical waveform analysis to complete cable wave velocity measurement, cable length testing and cable fault distance testing, and it works with the supplied pulse coupler for the multiple pulse method.

Designed For: Utility and power supply bureau cable fault location crews, electrical maintenance teams of large industrial plants, metro, railway, airport and port power departments, third-party cable commissioning and testing contractors, and high-voltage cable installation teams that must locate low-resistance, open-circuit and high-resistance flashover faults quickly on site.

Working Principle & Three Test Methods
Traveling Wave Principle

The instrument adopts the traveling wave method. When an electromagnetic wave travels along a cable and meets a non-uniform point where the characteristic impedance changes, a reflected wave returns to the test end. The polarity of the echo differs between a short-circuit point and an open-circuit point, so the fault distance can be determined from the reflected waveform.

Low-Voltage Pulse Method

A low-voltage pulse signal is applied to the cable under test, the reflected signal at the fault point is processed, and the coarse fault distance is read directly from the reflected waveform. It is used for low-resistance, short-circuit and open-circuit faults.

High-Voltage Flashover Method

For high-resistance flashover faults, a DC high voltage (or impulse) is applied to the cable until the fault point flashes over, generating a reflected signal that is picked up by the sampler and sent to the tester, so leakage and flashover high-resistance faults can also be located.

Multiple Pulse Method with Coupler

When used with the supplied pulse coupler, the multiple pulse method displays 8 sets of high and low voltage waveforms for easy comparison, making the fault echo much easier to identify on site. The pulse coupler withstands up to DC 35kV.

FAQ
Q1: Who is the XHGG502A cable fault pre-locator designed for?
It is designed for utility and power supply bureau cable fault location crews, electrical maintenance teams of large industrial plants, metro, railway, airport and port power departments, third-party cable commissioning and testing contractors, and high-voltage cable installation teams that must locate low-resistance, open-circuit and high-resistance flashover faults quickly on site.
Q2: Which test methods does the instrument support?
It supports the low-voltage pulse method, the high-voltage flashover method and the multiple pulse (8 pulse) method. The multiple pulse method works together with the supplied pulse coupler and displays 8 sets of high and low voltage waveforms for easy comparison.
Q3: What distance and accuracy can it achieve?
The distance measurement range is ≥120km with test ranges up to 100km. The minimum resolution is 0.07m, the test blind zone is ≤10m and the measurement error is ≤ ± (0.5% × L + 1m), where L is the cable length.
Q4: How is it powered and how long does it work?
It is rechargeable with AC110V~240V, 50Hz/60Hz and has a built-in 11.1V lithium battery pack. Charging takes about 2 hours and it works for over 5 hours, so tests can be carried out in environments without power.
Q5: What is the waveform storage capacity and protection?
It stores over 8000 low-voltage pulse and high-voltage flashover waveform records and over 250 multiple pulse records, which can be imported into computer software via USB. The protective chassis has a minimum IP54 rating.
