Product Description

The XHDD503C Cable Fault Pinpointer is engineered for rapid, high-precision location of underground power cable faults using the acoustic-magnetic synchronization method — a significant advancement over traditional acoustic-only pinpointing. When a high-voltage impulse generator discharges at the fault point, the instrument's probe simultaneously captures both the acoustic signal (the discharge "pop" traveling through soil) and the electromagnetic signal (traveling near-instantaneously). By calculating the time difference between these two signals, the XHDD503C guides operators to the exact fault location with an accuracy better than 0.1m, eliminating the guesswork and years of experience traditionally required for cable fault pinpointing.

How It Works

The acoustic-magnetic synchronization principle is fundamentally simple yet remarkably effective. At the moment of impulse discharge at the fault point, two signals are born: a sound wave that travels slowly through the surrounding soil, and an electromagnetic pulse that propagates at near-light speed along the cable. The probe detects both simultaneously. Because the electromagnetic signal arrives almost instantly while the sound takes measurable time to travel, the gap between them — displayed in milliseconds on the 5-inch LCD — directly indicates how far you are from the fault. Move the probe to where the time difference reaches its minimum, and the fault is directly beneath you.

Key Advantages
  • Better Than 0.1m Accuracy: Acoustic-magnetic time difference measurement pinpoints faults with sub-decimeter precision. Path identification accuracy is better than 0.5m — compliant with DL/T 849.2-2019 industry standards.
  • Four Selectable Filter Modes: All-pass (100–1600Hz) for general use; Low-pass (100–300Hz) for soft soil and sand where high frequencies are attenuated; High-pass (160–1600Hz) for hard pavement conditions; Band-pass (200–600Hz) as a balanced compromise. Match the filter to the terrain for optimal signal clarity.
  • IP65-Rated Waterproof Probe: Multi-layer physical isolation protects the sensitive acoustic and magnetic sensors. Operates reliably in wet trenches, rain, and dusty construction sites — no weather delays.
  • BNR Digital Noise Reduction + Mute: Background Noise Reduction filters out ambient interference from traffic, wind, and machinery. When the operator grips the handle, the instrument instantly activates mute to protect hearing during prolonged field sessions.
  • 500,000* Signal Amplification: 16-level output gain (0–112dB) captures extremely weak discharge signals from deep or high-impedance faults that conventional pinpointers miss entirely.
  • Real-Time Path Guidance: On-screen left/right indicators show whether the probe is to the left or right of the cable path, enabling operators to quickly correct their walking route without referring to external maps or markers.
  • Sunlight-Readable 5-inch Touch LCD: 854*480 resolution with 800nit brightness remains clearly visible under direct midday sunlight. Combined touchscreen and single-knob control for gloved-hand operation.
  • All-Day Field Operation: Powered by 4*18650 lithium batteries delivering 8+ hours of continuous use. Dedicated fast charger minimizes downtime between shifts.
  • Complete Field Kit Standard: Every XHDD503C includes the pinpointer host, probe assembly with connecting rod and tripod base, 7-core signal cable, noise-canceling monitoring headset, fast charger, multifunctional wrench, and shockproof carrying case.

Troubleshooting Common Field Situations
SymptomLikely CauseSolution
No magnetic field signal displayedLow battery / gain too low / cable connection looseCheck battery level; increase magnetic channel gain; verify 7-core cable connection
Headphones silent when probe tappedAcoustic gain too low / cable faultIncrease acoustic channel gain; check all cable connections
Weak popping sound along entire cableElectrical stress vibration (not a fault signal)Distinguish from real fault discharge: stress vibration does not vary with probe position; real fault signal peaks at one location
LCD difficult to read in sunlightBrightness settingAdjust to maximum (800nit); the display is designed for direct sunlight visibility
Recommended Workflow

Step 1: Use a TDR or pre-locator to determine the rough fault range (±50m). Step 2: Connect the XHDD503C to the high-voltage impulse generator and set a 3–5 second discharge cycle. Step 3: Start with low threshold, high gain, and high volume settings. Place the probe flat on the ground directly above the cable. Step 4: Walk along the cable path, monitoring the time difference reading — it will decrease as you approach the fault, then increase after you pass it. Step 5: Return to the minimum time difference point, switch to high threshold and low gain for fine positioning. The point where sound is loudest AND time difference is smallest is your fault location.

The XHDD503C is hands down the best fault locator we’ve used in Austin, Texas. It’s shockingly precise on commercial lot faults, super durable for daily field work and drastically cuts our excavation headaches. Worth every penny for our utility crew.
