Product Description
Dedicated 35kV Surge Generator — XHHV535-4T Model: XHHV535-4T | 2450J Discharge | 3 Operating Modes

Designed for: 35kV Cable Network Maintenance Crews, Fault Location Contractors, Utility Substation Test Teams

Core Value: A purpose-built 35kV surge generator — no multi-voltage switching, no compromise. 2450 joules of discharge energy optimized for one voltage class, with three operating modes to match your fault location strategy.

Why a Dedicated 35kV Unit

Multi-voltage surge generators compromise at each voltage step — capacitor values, discharge timing, and energy distribution are averaged across ranges. The XHHV535-4T eliminates this compromise by dedicating its entire power stage and 4μF capacitor to the 35kV class. The result: 2450 joules of clean, controlled discharge energy optimized for medium-voltage cable networks from 33kV to 35kV.

For utilities and contractors whose fleet operates primarily on 35kV distribution and sub-transmission cables, a dedicated unit means no voltage selector errors, no accidental energization at the wrong range, and consistent surge characteristics across every fault location event.

Three Operating Modes — One Instrument, Any Fault Strategy
DC Withstand Continuous DC output for cable withstand voltage testing per IEC standards. Set target voltage, hold for specified duration, verify insulation integrity.
Single Pulse Manual trigger — operator controls the discharge moment. Ideal for acoustic verification at a suspected fault point or when coordinating with a crew at the far end.
Auto Cycle ~5s interval automatic timed discharge. Standard mode for acoustic-magnetic pinpointing — rhythmic pulse train creates consistent acoustic signatures for XHDD503 detection.

2450J vs Typical Multi-Voltage Generators: At 35kV with 4μF, the XHHV535-4T produces up to 20% more discharge energy than multi-voltage units at comparable settings. This additional energy translates directly into louder acoustic signatures at the fault point — critical for pinpointing high-resistance faults where weak discharges are otherwise undetectable at the surface.

Panel Controls — Designed for Muscle Memory

The XHHV535-4T's control layout follows a logical left-to-right operating sequence, minimizing training time and reducing operator error in field conditions:

Control / IndicatorFunction
Ammeter / VoltmeterDual 2.5-grade analog meters — left ammeter shows low-voltage side current, right voltmeter displays real-time HV output in kV
Zero Indicator (Yellow)Illuminates when voltage control knob is at zero position — Start button is only effective when this indicator is lit
HV Indicator (Red)Lights when high voltage output is active — serves as visual warning to all personnel within the test area
Power Indicator (Green)Confirms AC 220V input is present after main power switch is engaged
Mode SelectorThree-position rotary switch: DC Withstand · Single Pulse · Auto Cycle
Start ButtonEnables HV output — only effective at zero position (zero-start interlock). Pulls up the start relay when pressed
Stop ButtonImmediately cuts HV output, drops start relay, and triggers automatic capacitor discharge — press at any sign of abnormal operation
Voltage Control KnobContinuously adjustable from 0 to 35kV — clockwise rotation increases output. Must return to zero before each start cycle

Integrated System Architecture
  • DC High-Voltage Source: Built-in step-up transformer and rectifier, producing clean DC output from 0 to 35kV without external HV power supply
  • Energy Storage Capacitor: 4μF dedicated capacitor, matched to the 35kV output stage for optimal energy density and discharge timing
  • Discharge Sphere Assembly: Precision-machined discharge gap within shielded enclosure, producing controlled, repeatable surge characteristics for each discharge cycle
  • Automatic Discharge Circuit: On Stop command or power loss, the internal capacitor is automatically discharged through a safety bleed resistor — voltmeter drops to zero, confirming safe state before cable disconnection

Standard Fault Location Workflow with XHHV535-4T
  1. Pre-Locate: Connect a TDR cable fault locator (XZH TEST 502 series) to identify the approximate fault distance. The 4T's internal waveform sampling module provides a clean Q9 trigger signal for synchronized TDR acquisition
  2. Set Mode: Select Auto Cycle mode for acoustic-magnetic pinpointing, or DC Withstand for pre-repair insulation verification
  3. Zero-Check and Start: Confirm yellow zero indicator is lit, press Start, then increase voltage to the target surge level via the voltage control knob
  4. Pinpoint: In Auto Cycle mode, the 4T delivers 2450J discharges every ~5 seconds. Deploy an acoustic-magnetic pinpointer (XHDD503) along the pre-located cable section to capture discharge sound and electromagnetic signals, narrowing the search to the exact fault position
  5. Stop and Discharge: Press Stop — the 4T automatically cuts HV output and discharges the internal capacitor. Verify voltmeter reads zero before disconnecting output cables

Safety Precautions — 35kV Operations
  • 35kV is a lethal voltage level — only qualified high-voltage technicians may operate this equipment
  • The yellow Zero indicator must be illuminated before pressing Start — this is a mandatory safety interlock
  • Do not touch output cables, discharge rod, or any HV connection while the red HV indicator is lit
  • Press Stop immediately if abnormal meter readings, arcing sounds, or burning odors are detected
  • Always verify voltmeter returns to zero and automatic discharge is complete before approaching the test area or disconnecting cables
  • Connect the unit's ground terminal to the station earth grid before energizing — never operate without a verified earth connection
