Six Test Voltages Explained

Choosing the right test voltage is essential for accurate insulation assessment. The XHMR-10KVB covers the full range of commonly used test voltages in one portable instrument.

Absorption Ratio & Polarization Index

Insulation resistance alone is not always sufficient to judge insulation condition, especially for large equipment with significant capacitance. The absorption ratio (DAR) and polarization index (PI) compare insulation readings taken at different times during the test to reveal moisture and contamination inside the insulation.

Absorption Ratio (DAR): the ratio of the 60-second reading to the 15-second reading, used to detect moisture in insulation
Polarization Index (PI): the ratio of the 10-minute reading to the 1-minute reading, used to assess the overall insulation condition of large motors, generators and transformers
The XHMR-10KVB calculates DAR and PI automatically, eliminating manual timing and calculation errors
In general, PI values above 2.0 indicate good insulation, values between 1.0 and 2.0 suggest the insulation needs attention, and values below 1.0 indicate serious moisture or contamination
Interface & Operation

The instrument provides LINE, V, GUARD, EARTH, charger and USB interfaces. The high-voltage test terminal banana plug connects to the LINE interface, the shielded cable connector plugs into the GUARD interface when required, and the EARTH interface connects to the protective ground. The voltage select button cycles through the six test voltage levels, the test button starts the measurement, and the power button controls the instrument.

Connect the high-voltage test lead to the LINE interface and the ground lead to the EARTH interface of the tested equipment
Select the appropriate test voltage level with the voltage select button according to the rated voltage of the tested equipment
Press the test button to start the measurement and read the insulation resistance value on the large LCD display
For DAR or PI testing, keep the test running for the required time; the instrument calculates the ratios automatically
Review stored data with the MR function or upload it to a computer through the USB interface for saving and printing
